Tasty Tidbits Thursday: Oscar party food

26 Feb

As you know, I like to watch the Oscars to see the fashion — and the opening skit is usually entertaining. So at the last minute, I thought it would be fun to do something special with my kids to celebrate the Oscars. And since my daughter’s birthday was the day before, we turned it into a spur-of-the-moment birthday/Oscar party.

{Hayley with her Grandmas — Ella snuck in too}I wanted to make some easy, kid-friendly food.
we came up with was:
  • Garden Veggie Pizza Squares
  • Tuxedo Brownie Cookies
  • Chocolate-dipped Tuxedo Strawberries
  • Garden Salad
  • and assorted chips and salsas
  • The Best Chocolate Cake – Ever!!!

Garden Veggie Pizza Squares:

(Using pre-packaged crescent roll dough makes it easy and the veggies make it a good thing!)

1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent rolls
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (1 ounce) package Ranch-style dressing mix
2 carrots, finely chopped
1/2 cup chopped red bell peppers
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup fresh broccoli, chopped
1/2 cup chopped green onions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Roll out crescent rolls onto a large non-stick baking sheet. Stretch and flatten to form a single rectangular shape on the baking sheet. Bake 11 to 13 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Allow to cool.
  3. Place cream cheese in a medium bowl. Mix cream cheese with 1/2 of the ranch dressing mix. Adjust the amount of dressing mix to taste. Spread the mixture over the cooled crust. Arrange carrots, red bell pepper, broccoli and green onions on top. Chill in the refrigerator approximately 1 hour. Cut into bite-size squares to serve.

Tuxedo Brownie Cookies:
These are easy coolies to make, and the perfect “dress up” cookies for parties.

  • 1 22.5 oz. package brownie mix with syrup pouch
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 13 oz. package Hershey Hugs Kisses (black and white), unwrapped

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat mat. Or spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the brownie mix, syrup packet, cocoa, water, oil and eggs together.
  2. Drop by rounded teaspoonsful onto prepared cookie sheet, one inch apart.
  3. Bake 8 minutes or just until set.
  4. Remove from oven and let cool 1 minute. Press a Hershey “hug” in the middle of each cookie.

What’s on your Wall Wednesday???

25 Feb

On Wednesdays I usually post about my Favorite Thing for the week, but since I posted my Top Ten Favorite Things on Monday, you are probably sick of my favorite things. So I am joining in What’s on your Wall Wednesday. Barb, from Grits and Glamour, has a really fun group that posts cool wall arrangements and ideas.

So here are the walls in my foyer:

In November we had our family picture taken. I framed a collage of our pictures and then had a vinyl saying made by a girl on etsy. This is right at the front entrance of our home.
This is the wall right across from the front door. My sister and I made floral arrangements a couple of years ago. This is hung right next to a really cute cabinet where I keep some of my treasured figurines.
Right around a little wall from the front door is a big entrance to the basement. It used to have a door, but about a year ago we opened it up with a big arch so the house would seem more open. This is the wall going down the stairs to the basement. You can see this star from the front door. It was a brown color when I bought it, but I painted it a seafoam blue as an accent color.
This is the stairway going upstairs and is right across from the front door. I had this huge mirror in my old house in the living room. I love how the mirror reflects the light from the sidelights in my front door and makes the foyer twice as light!

So that’s my foyer. Thanks for stopping by!
Have a Wonderful Wednesday!!!

Trendy Tuesdays: Academy Awards Edition

24 Feb

Every year I look forward to watching the Academy Awards. Not to see what film wins (I didn’t see any of the nominated ones this year…), but for the fashion!

This year I noticed three trends:

  • One-shouldered gowns

  • Gowns with belts

  • Mermaid gowns

There were a few gowns that weren’t my favorites:

And these were my favorites:

Do you like to watch the Oscars?
And which gowns were your favorites?

And now something very serious, Lura just let me know about a little baby who really needs prayers right now.

Lura says:

Gracie was born last March with hypoplastic left heart syndrome HLHS. I have been reading this blog and praying for Gracie since she was born. Go to her blog to get the whole story. This precious baby and her family have gone through one procedure and complication after another. She was scheduled for her second surgery on Feb.12th but her little heart was not healthy enough to risk it. She was put on the heart transplant list…… and amazingly they found a heart for her only 1 1/2 weeks later.

This is little Gracie as she waited to go in to surgery to get her new heart Sat. night. Gracie got her new heart… but it is not working right. There is only about a 1% chance that the new heart will be defective….. and Gracie got the 1% heart. They did not realize the new heart was bad until they had removed Gracie’s heart and put the new one in. She is now on the heart
re-transplant list.

This little girl and her family have gone through so much…. physically, emotionally and financially. Would you please pray for them. They are asking for our prayers and appreciate the support. They have seen one miracle after another take place since Gracie was born 11 months ago. They believe another miracle can happen if it is God’s will. They have not given up.

I have seen some miracles through this blogging world
when we all band together and pray.
Please send out your prayers for this sweet, sweet little baby!
Thank you!

Nesting Place: I did it in 10 Minutes (bedroom) Finale!

20 Feb

On e of my favorite blogs, Nesting Place, has these great tutorials on how to transform your space in 10 minutes. Today she is having a finale and everyone is posting their 10 minute projects. I decided to do my bedroom.
Here are the steps she suggested:

1. Make the bed: I found a pretty duvet at Target and added a bedskirt, shams and pillows from Pottery Barn. With coordinating sheets. It feels so wonderful! I love pillows (as you can see).

2. Clear the clutter. Our bedroom seems to be a catchall for toys, books, sippy cups and whatever else the kids are dragging around. So I cleared that out.

3. Keep it personal. Our room only had pictures of the kids. So I found one of the two of us and put it in a special spot!

4. Go wireless. I took the alarm clock off one of the nightstands. The tv I have behind an armoire in case we ever need it. She also suggests to bring the outdoors in so I brought some tulips in to freshen up the space!

5. Lighting. We installed little lights on the wall above the bed for latenight reading and to clear up space on the night stands. I love it!

6. A place to sit. I put a little bench at the end of the bed. It is a nice space to sit and put on my shoes in the morning. We also have a little sitting area in an alcove which is sunny in the afternoons and great for reading or taking a nap.

7. Create space. I have a tiny closet and needed more space, so we bought a unit from IKEA and installed it on one wall of the bedroom with a mirror in the middle. The mirror is great for checking my outfit before I leave each morning. I added a personal touch by buying some special knobs from Anthropologie to spif it up a little.

So that it! I love my bedroom! Thanks Nesting Place. Go over and check out the party and all of the great projects!!!
