Summer Mantel:Take Two {adding reclaimed shutters}

15 Jul

There was something missing from my “Beachy” mantel. I couldn’t put my finger on it yesterday. Then last night as I was getting ready for bed I remembered some free shutters that I picked up by the side of the road on trash day a few months ago. Perfect!! You know how a flashbulb goes off in your mind?

A fast, easy and free solution to my decorating dilemma!
Before

So this morning I dusted off those old shutters and dug through my spraypaint stash for some paint. I painted the first coat the same “aqua” color as the frame on my mantel. And then when it was finished drying, I added “heirloom white” over the top.

The last thing I did was get my trusty mouse sander and I roughed it all up so the delicious aqua peeks through as well as the original brown color and the bare wood. I love the dimension that sanding adds!!

Then I put it on my mantel. I opened the shutters a little so that the reflection of the mirror still comes through and lights up the room. Then I rearranged some of the mantel items.

And I put the little canvas pennant at the top of the mantel. I got the little sewn pennant shapes from The Canvas Corp. I love the plain canvas with my beach theme.

I think my mantel is done.
{For now — lol!!}

I put my Summer Subway Art above my entry cabinet. I decided it didn’t really go with my Beachy Mantel. But I still really love it!

PS — While my shutters were drying, I ran to Home Depot and got some samples for my kitchen makeover. Here’s what we have so far. Any opinions??  the cabinets are now white so I was thinking a warm grey would be pretty….

Summer Wreath and Mantel {tutorial}

14 Jul

Do you go through periods where you are super inspired to do projects and then other periods where you feel burned out and don’t want to do anything?? I do. Yesterday I felt super inspired. And I am an impatient crafter. When the feeling strikes, I dig around and find whatever is in my cupboards to make a project.

I was looking at my mantel and I really wanted to make it look
“Beachy” and “Summery”.

So I went out in my garage “stash” and found some grapevine wreaths from the Dollar Store. I decided to use the small size. Then I found some black and white pinstripe material. And I crafted up a quick summer wreath with things I had laying around.

This is a 15-minute project.

Here’s what I did:

  • I cut a long piece of the pinstripe fabric 2 inches wide.

  • Then I wrapped it around the grapevine wreath. I wrapped it pretty tightly and overlapped it so that it was pretty cushy with material.
  • I secured the end with my trusty glue gun.

  •  Then I took the material and cut a long strip that was 4 inches wide. And I folded it in half and ironed it so it was flat. So now the material is 2 inches wide with a closed end.
  •  I folded the material in pleats, into a flower shape and hot glued in between the pleats. Then I hot glued the flower onto my wreath.
  • I did the same thing to make two smaller flowers, except instead of a folded 2 inch width, I cut a 2 inch section of fabric and then folded and ironed it so that the folded width was 1 inch.
  • Then I glued those two fabric flowers on each side of the bigger flower.

  • I covered two big buttons with fabric and attached them to the smaller flowers.

  • Then I hot glued a star fish to the bigger flower.

That’s it!! SUPER simple and fast AND inexpensive.
Then I set about making my mantel more “Summery” and “Beachy”. I got out my glass covered vases and put vintage doorknobs inside of them.
And I talked my son and neice into spray painted an old frame beachy blue for me. I also took a rope bag that I had kept from Target and “framed” it in between an embroidery hoop. I also did this with some doilies.
I made a canvas pennant banner that I thought looked kind of beachy.
I’m not going to show you the whole mantel today though, because I just decided that it needs one more element.

I have a project in mind that I think will be perfect. I’ll work on it today. You know when you finish a project and it just doesn’t feel complete. That’s how I feel about the mantel. I need to work on that last element.

So until then, here’s my partially finished Summer Mantel 🙂

 Ooooh, I almost forgot… I found some cute little lamps at Home Goods a few weeks ago for my buffet table in there. Aren’t they cute??

I think I am going to paint that buffet table — what color do you think I should try??

 I hope you are having a great week!!!

My Mantels love a good Party! {Valentine’s Day ♥ Mantel Decorating}

24 Jan
My Mantles love a good party. They look forward to Beth’s Valentine Mantel Party all year. It’s a great time for mantels to get together and socialize – lol. Seriously though, Beth’s Mantel parties are really fun.
Last year I went all romantic and flowery and loved it!!
This year I wanted to do something a little different — so I went a little more whimsical.
I have always wanted to make a Boa Wreath, and what better holiday to make one for than Valentine’s Day? It’s just about the only time of the year that pink boas look good – lol!

I found this little sign at Hobby Lobby {1/3 off – $3} and I made a little LOVE vinyl with my Silhouette to dress it up a little. I also made some organza flowers with little sparkly rhinestones in the center and hot glued those on.
I finished it up with some whimsical polka dot ribbon.
I can’t resist polka dots!!
Going along with my PINK theme, I found some pink plates at Tai Pan and cut out some vinyl with my Silhouette for those.  I love the silhouette of the boy and girl kissing. I put a bow and pink rhinestone in the girl’s ponytail to give it a little 3-D action.
And the ampersand is so graphic in the other plate. Then I took some left over ribbon and wrapped it around the top of my candle holders. I found those at Target about 7 years ago on clearance. Gotta love the clearance section!!
I also made some paper hearts and put them in my cloche on the coffee table.
I still love my Coffee Filter Pom Poms. So pretty and romantic!
And here’s my family room mantel all dressed up.
Be sure to check out the beautiful mantels over at The Stories of A2Z !!!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — My Blue and Silver Christmas Mantel!!

1 Dec
I finally got my Living Room Mantel Done! I don’t know why it took me so long. I get all of those Christmas boxes out and get overwhelmed – lol. I decided not to put up my living room tree this year, so I used the ornaments I usually put on the tree on my mantel!
I didn’t buy anything new except for some darling .99 cent faux Mercury Glass Votives from Target!! Aren’t they the cutest???

I arranged the ornaments in a ball by connecting the hooks together.

I also took a frame I got for $1 this summer at a garage sale, spray painted it blue and put made a little ornament wreath to fit inside of it. I love it laying on my big mirror above my fireplace.

I also made a Ruffle Tree. I just adore it. I put it on a glass Dollar Store candlestick on my living room coffee table. I found some little finials at Hobby Lobby and put one on top. So cute!
 And I took that wooden platter I bought at Pier1 and put this cute Santa vinyl on it. I got the vinyl from the adorable Shelley from House of Smith’s Wonderfully Wordy shop!
And at night the candles are so festive. I just love candles at Christmas!!!
