What do you listen to while you are driving your kids around? I am usually listening to the Disney Channel or a Disney CD since it seems like my kids are always in charge of the music channels in the car. And as they’ve gotten older, the more they want to listen to their music. So when Music Mom’s contacted me about reviewing music, I was excited to sample some new kids’ music. Then when the package came, I was pleasantly surprised to find adult music. But I was also mildly horrified that I had signed up to do this. I’m not getting paid. Why did I say I would do this? What if I hated the music? Why did I think I could review music?? I decided that I would only write a review if I truly liked the music.
I listened to Corneille: The Birth of Cornelius and decided that not only was it good music, but really good music! Corneille is an amazing, soulful singer. He credits his musical style to his early influences of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke and Prince. When I first listened to the album, I was reminded of one of my favorite artists: Sade.
After I listened to the album I found out that Corneille has had more than his share of tragedy in his life. While he was born in Germany, Corneille’s family moved to Rwanda when he was seven and tragedy struck when Corneille lost his entire family during the genocide in 1994. He managed to escape, but spent his youth confused and found solace in his music.
I love this quote from him:
“Music has been the place where I could go to hide and forget about the world. I couldn’t make sense of a majority of things that happened to me, so I used music as a shield. But over time, music has become a vehicle to channel out everything that I’ve been keeping from myself for all these years. And the new album is definitely the most honest, real assessment of everything that ’s happened in my life, because I’m not trying to hide as much.”
This is the perfect album for a romantic dinner with your sweetheart or a cozy evening with friends. Go on over to Corneille’s site and learn more about him as well as hear some of his music. If anyone deserves to make it in this world, this young man does who has already been through so much.
