"Summer Social" Guest Project — Make a Mod Podge Silhouette Canvas!!

20 Jul
D7K_5781
Hello!
IMG_9279web
I’m Char from Crap I’ve Made, where I blog about….the crap I make.

I love fountain Diet Cokes and cookies. I also love Jen and I’m kind of mad that my step mom (who is her neighbor) didn’t introduce us like 7 or 8 years ago.

Winking smile I’m a mom to 4 insanely cute kids

D7K_5545
(See?)
who are all home for the summer and driving me a *little* bit nuts. So, I wanted to come up with a project we could work on together.
We came up with this silhouette canvas.
D7K_5787
Supplies:
  • Canvas
  • Old magazines &; scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Acrylic craft paint
    Stain (optional)
  • Sandpaper
1. First, you’re going to let your kids go nuts cutting up magazine pages.
D7K_5753
(The kid on the table in pajamas in the middle of the day in the background is totally optional.)
We tried to pick pages with a lot of color (as opposed to black and white text), but that was really the only direction I gave them.
2. Once you have a whole bunch of cut up magazines, you’ll want to Mod Podge them to a canvas. There’s also no rhyme or reason to this, just make sure you cover the entire canvas.
D7K_5754
No need to have a panic attack that everything’s not smooth…some lumpy/puckered/not perfect parts are encouraged!
D7K_5757

3. Once it’s good and dry, trace your silhouette with a pencil on the canvas.
D7K_5759
I went with this bird on a branch design from the Silhouette library. I think a big initial or monogram would look fabulous as well. Or how about a chevron pattern on the whole thing? (That was for you, Jen Winking smile)
{lol – thanks Char!!}
4. Once you’ve traced, you’ll want to fill in the rest of the canvas with craft paint. There are no pictures of this step because my daughter/back up photographer and I were both doing the painting.
D7K_5762
YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY STOP NOW. I like this look and I probably would have stopped now if our silhouette had been something more graphic.
I decided to take some sandpaper to the painted area so that some of our magazines would peek through.
D7K_5765
Again, YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY STOP NOW! There’s really no wrong way to do this…just go with what you like!
5. I applied some stain next.
D7K_5767
I put it on streaky and wiped some off.
D7K_5781
YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY STOP NOW.
6. I, however, did not. I watered down a few more shades of acrylic paint and did some more streaking (not that kind…what kind of blogger do you think I am?) and a little splattering.
D7K_5787
YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY STOP NOW…because I totally did.

Chevron Pennant Tutorial {Silhouette project}

23 Mar

I may have an addiction to Pennants/Bunting.
I think it is adorable and I want to make one for every room and every occasion – lol. I have been anxiously waiting for some of Silhouette’s Fabric Interfacing and was so excited when it came the other day.
I decided to make a project that combines three of my favorite things right now —
Polka Dots, Pennants and Chevron!!

{Chevron Pennants}

And Canvas Corp sent me a fun box of products the other day to make projects with – thanks! I got out some canvas pennants, 5 different polka dotted material, my Silhouette, the Silhouette Transfer paper and some cool Canvas Corp. rope and set to work.

I downloaded a Chevron Border from the Silhouette Online Store. And then I just made it as wide as the widest width on the pennants and copied it on the screen so that the screen was as long as each pennant.

Then I cut out the Silhouette Fabric Interfacing material in a sheet that size — 8 inches by 8 inches. I did this for each of the pennants that I wanted to make. And then I cut out a piece of material that was the same size. To make the fabric stick to the interfacing, you iron it on. So I did that. And then you peel the backing off the interfacing and it’s ready for the Silhouette!

Then I cut the chevrons out. You use your cutting mat. I put my pink cap on and set the depth to the highest it would go. To make it cut all the way through along the whole chevron, it’s smart to set your Silhouette to double cut the material. The material might bunch a little. Just set the speed really low and don’t freak out if it starts bunching up. I had to use my scissors on a few places where the material didn’t cut through all the way. Overall it worked out very well.

Once the material was cut out and the chevrons were all separated, I laid them out on my pennants and hot glued each chevron in a few places to keep it straight. At this point, you can hot glue all of the chevrons on and they look great like that. Or, what I did was once I attached them on the pennants, I sewed around each Chevron to give it a little more ooomph.

Then I took the small Canvas Corp. rope and sewed it on the back of the pennants. I left 3 inches in between each pennant. The last thing I did was cut 25 1 inch strips of the same material I used in the pennants and tied one set of each color in between each pennant.

I love it!! It looks so cute with my Chevron Plate on my mantle. And, they match my Damask Lamp Shade. So fun!

Just think of the possibilities now that Silhouette can cut fabric. I can’t wait to experiment some more!!! Silhouette is running a Special from now until March 27th (Sunday):

I am linking up to these fun parties – check them out!

{{{Valentine Pillows}}}

27 Jan
I never really decorated for Valentine’s Day, until last year. And then it was like a big light bulb went off in my head!
Now I think Valentine’s Day is in my top 3 favorite holidays to make projects for.

Here’s a little project I made last week, using cute fabric, heat transfer material and my Silhouette.
{{Valentine’s Pillows}}

I wanted to make some pillows with a kind of modern twist!
And if you don’t have a Silhouette machine, you could still totally make these. All you need to do is print out an image and then put the image behind your heat transfer material and trace the image onto the heat transfer material. Then cut it out with scissors or an exacto knife. You might have to hold the image paper and heat transfer paper up to a window while you trace it out.
I made the heart using the Silhouette software and then downloaded the thought bubble from the Silhouette Online Store.
The pillows are simple, flap backed pillows with a 4 inch overlap in the back.
**And my secret to pillows that keep a nice shape is this — after making the pillow covers, turn them right side out and iron them flat. Then sew a tiny seam all around the edges of the pillows. This keeps a nice, sharp edge.
Now I have some festive pillows for the 14th!!
Yay!!
And, if you follow TT&J on Facebook, you know that I am in Nashville at Blissdom!! I have met so many fun bloggers so far. It’s so fun!! We had a little party tonight where I was able to hang out with Beckie from Infarrantly, Kami from No Bigggie, Lorie from Be Different, Act Normal, Allison from House of Hepworth’s, Mique from 30 Handmade Days and April from Funky, Vintage Kitchen. Plus so many more cute girls!!! {Kellie from This Blessed Nest took this picture — she is so adorable IRL too}
Have a Super Day!!!!
