Advent Calendar from a Scratch-n-Dent Door!

I was at Ikea a few months ago. And you know that side room where they keep all the scratch and dent stuff? Well I found a big door in there for $4!! I was so excited. The other Ikea shoppers were looking at me like I was nuts. Who is that crazy lady who is giggling about some random, scratched up door?? I was going to make some Christmas Subway Art with it, but the wall I wanted to put it on wasn’t big enough for this big old door. So it sat in my garage for a couple months.

Then when I got my Christmas boxes out, I found my little musical advent cones that I made and embellished last year and thought that instead of hanging them on my tree this year, that maybe I could turn that old door into an advent board.

So I headed down to my favorite Home Depot. Did I tell you they offered me a job in there because I show up so much?? hahahaha. I picked up some picture hanging cable and some 0-eye screws.

I decided that the white door was way too white, so I used my little mouse sander to distress it a little. Then I put some Walnut Stain over the whole thing and rubbed it into the the edges real well.  I measured the board and decided that I could make 7 rows of wire 7 inches apart.

So I marked it off with a pencil. And then drilled pilot holes with my screwdriver. And then screwed those 0-eye screw in. Then I cut off some of the picture hanging cable and twisted it around the 0-eye screw really well. I used my pliers to get it real tight. Then I stretched it out to the other 0-eye and twisted it on as tightly as I could. I did that 7 times.

I also found some great keyhole hangers that fit flush against the wall – they are great.

I love this project because I am using it as an advent board right now, but I plan to leave it up all year. It can be a message board and a place for the kids’ to hang their artwork, messages, pictures or other cards that we get throughout the year.

I went to the Dollar Store and filled my cones with some awesome stuff — they had chocolate coal at the Dollar Store, isn’t that fun? Plus, I found holiday erasers, pens, lollipops, and pencils. And on the 24th I am going to put in Movie tickets in envelopes and we are going to go see a Christmas movie together that day!!

And to go along with each day, I have added an activity.

Creative Fridays: Kitchen cabinet update on the cheap

I saw this picture on Kimba’s site and loved it! It’s from Viv from ish and chi. Isn’t it cute? I thought I want to do that! But I wasn’t sure I wanted to be stuck with wallpaper if I got bored with it – plus, what would the wallpaper do to my cabinets if I ever wanted to remove it?

So I thought, why not try using wrapping paper?

I think the trick is to use a really thick wrapping paper. ( I bought mine at Hallmark, but I have bought some really nice, heavy wrapping paper at Hobby Lobby too. )

{Here’s the cabinet: before}

I want to be able to change the paper out seasonally or whenever I get bored with it, so I put it up using two-sided sticky tape. I used the regular kind, but I think a better product to use would be re-positionable two-sided tape.This is what I used:

• ruler (or measuring tape)
• scissors
• 2 sided sticky tape
• Exacto Knife
• wrapping paper

{First I cleaned it all out including the shelves}

Details: {Then I measured the length and width of the cabinet. I added 1/2 inch to each just to be safe. The trick is lining up the corner at the top so it is square with the top of the cabinet. I put a strip of sticky tape in that corner. Then put that corner on first. Then I smoothed the wrapping paper down that side to the bottom corner on the same side. I put a few strips of sticky tape down that side. Then I took the paper and smoothed it diagonally down to the opposite corner and put a strip of sticky take there. Then I smoothed it going up to the right top side. If you mess up, start over. The wrapping paper is cheap and it’s easy to use with the sticky tape.

My cabinet is wider than the wrapping paper roll, so I did have to line up a seam. By measuring the paper a little bigger than I needed, I could give myself some room for error. So each on one side of the width and length was a little too long. I smoothed the paper into the corner of the cabinet, making a fold. Then I ran the exacto knife along the edge and made a straight line. Easy!}

{So – here it is! }

I gathered a bunch of my Spring accessories and made a little grouping incorporating some platters, serving pieces and bowls in white.

This is what it looks like through the glass doors. You could take off the doors in your kitchen and make a cupboard into a little showcase for seasonal decorations and serving pieces. You could also cover the sides of the cabinet too if you wanted.

(The entire project took me about an hour and cost me less than $6.00}
