Guest Project — Pottery Barn-inspired Clock for less than $10!

 

What fun to be able to do a guest post on Jennifer’s blog!

My name is Selina and I come to you from Creative Juices Décor.  What you will find on my blog is lots of inspiration for all your Creative Juices! 
I LOVE home design/decorating, thrift store shopping, healthy recipes
and crafting.  I have 3 young kids so I also have fun thinking of crafts
for them to do.  Come stop by, I think you’ll be inspired! 

 

Isn’t this pottery barn
wall décor just beautiful?  If only we could re-create for less
everything we see in that magazine.  Well today’s post will give that a
try – Pottery Barn for under $10.00.  
Yep, that’s right, this next
project cost me around 6 bucks. 

Thrift store board – $1.50

Now how I got there. 🙂

 

Prime board – let dry.

 

Spray on one coat cream colored paint. Dry

 

Cover with crinkled tissue paper and apply mod podge or a glue/water mix over the paper.

 

This is hard to see but it left little crinkled lines and indents throughout the piece.  Let dry completely. 

Apply one more coat of cream spray paint.  Let dry and screw on a hanger in the back

Paint and glaze the board.

 

 

Apply
tacks, buttons, or whatever you have on hand as the main number spots. I
actually had to drill the holes first before hammering these tacks in. 
It was scary since I am so bad with power tools! (see this bread box post!)

 Print
and cut out Roman numeral numbers as a template. (I just took mine off
the computer with free images)   Trace onto board, and fill in with
black paint.

 

Am I done?  Sure, why not. 🙂  I think it looks just as good as the EXPENSIVE pottery barn clock décor, don’t you? 

Cost break down:

Circular piece of wood: 1.50 (thrift store!)

Cream paint: 3.25 (I had white on hand but wanted it creamier)

Glue: 0.34

Tacks: 0.25 (I paid about 1.00 for 30 of them – thrift store)

I had all the other paints on hand from other miscellaneous projects.

So grand total I spent: $5.34

Pottery Barn – inspired Number Pillows & a Giveaway!!

I have admired these pillows from Pottery Barn for a while, plus I love numbers. So I thought it would be fun to try to make something similar. Of course I changed it up a little…

I bought my fabric at Hobby Lobby and decided to try canvas because I thought they would hold up really well out of that material.

 

I made the stencils in Microsoft Word by using Bodoni 1200 point. I couldn’t get it to fit on a regular 8 x 12 sheet of paper, so I cut a piece of 12 x 12 cardstock to 8 1/2 x 12 and ran it through my printer using the “legal size” setting.

Then I cut the number out using an exacto knife. To stencil the number on my canvas, I taped the stencil down around the edges and used double-sided sticky tape underneath.(I added a little more curve to the ball on the number 2 so it would look more like the PB number 2).

I took the stencils off the canvas and then went over it again with a small paint brush. I used fabric paint so I can wash the pillow covers.

I made envelope-style covers. The pillows covers are 18 inches wide, so the front covers are 18 inches square. For the back, it is two pieces of material 18 inches in height and 22 inches in length so they overlap each other by 4 inches.

Then I thought it would be fun to add a little zip by adding ric rack to the edges of the pillow. I bought large ric rack at Joanne’s (they sell it by the yard). Each pillow took a little less than 2 yards. The first thing I did was sew the ric rack on the top of the number fabric. This holds it in place so it is even. You must start the ric rack off of the material (because it frays and this way the end part is in the seam).

 

Then I took the back of the pillow (which I made envelope style), I put that back section on face down, then pinned it to the front panel. Then I turned it over so I could see the stitching I had just done and I sewed right over that seam. Thanks Mom for letting me come over and helping me figure out the ric rack!

I turned it inside out and voila — I had a pillow cover.

 

For two of the pillows I used a coordinating fabric on the back instead of the plain canvas. I am going to experiment with my Cricut, because I think I can figure out a way to make a stencil of the other side with the definitions.

I also made a number 4 pillow, but ran out of ric rack, so I will show you that one when it is done — just keeping it real!

I am trying to decide where I want to put them. I think they are kind of fun and instead of paying $30 for each, I paid ($5 for material, $1 for fabric paint, $6 for ric rack) $12 for all four pillows!

And now the giveaway! I love to read. Especially in the winter, it’s nice to curl up with a good book when it’s cold outside. This is a really funny, wonderful book called Love Finds You In Hershey, Pennsylvania.I love that the main character is a chef! Here’s what it’s about!

It therefore stands to reason that her love of desserts is a genetic inheritance and not to be taken lightly. When dieting, she consoles herself with midnight viewings of the Food Network.

Pottery Barn-inspired Winter Mantlescape

I always feel a little blah in January when I take down my holiday decorations. It feels too soon to think about decorating for Valentine’s Day for some reason.

Yesterday I was flipping through my Pottery Barn catalog and spied this sparkly white mantle-scape.  I loved all of the birds, nests and white and I thought — hey, I have some nests and bird things around here somewhere… {I just used what I had and I didn’t have enough silvery things, but I was going for the general idea… }

 So I gathered up all a bunch of things from various rooms and put it all up on my mantle…

And it feels so much more festive and happy!

 Then I stood back and thought — it just needs something… I decided what if I put a word on the mantle that encompasses what I want to focus on this coming year? And the word that comes to mind is family. I really want to focus on them this year. They are the most important people in my life. I feel like my kids are growing up so fast that I don’t want to miss out on anything!

So I took a piece of scrapbook paper, cut it down to 8.5 by 11 and ran it through my printer with the word family in courier font (72 point) and out it in a frame I got at a garage sale a millions years ago. I put it up and added some candles and it felt done.
