A little Project to do this weekend — Make a Burlap Scrabble Wreath!

19 Nov
Can you believe that next week is THANKGIVING???
Gah – where did the time go?? There is so much to DO! If you have an hour to spare, here’s a little wreath that will add a little Thanksgiving cheer to your front door:

 {Click on the Read More button for the full tutorial}

Here’s what you need:

  • A wreath form
  • Burlap — a 36″ square piece should do
  • A few fabric scraps
  • Some Scrabble tiles**
  • Hot glue and gun
  • Two types of coordinating ribbon

**Here’s a fun tip — if you want to make one of these and don’t want to destroy your Scrabble game, you can buy “lots” of Scrabble pieces on ebay or etsy. Or, if you contact Hasbro, you can order a complete replacement set of tiles. It was around $6 for 100 pieces last year.

Here’s what you do:

  • Cut two pieces of burlap about 4 inches in width by 36 inches in length. Or, if you have a long piece of burlap you can use a 72 inch strip. Hot glue one end of the strip to the back of the wreath. Then wrap the burlap around your wreath. My wreath form was 12 inches wide, so if you are using a bigger form, you will need a longer piece of burlap.

  • Once the form is wrapped in burlap, set it aside. Now you will make some rolled flowers. I made  18 flowers in different sizes. For each flower, you will need a strip of material about 1 inch in width by either 32 inches, 24 inches or 18 inches, depending on how wide you want the flower to be. Fold the material in half width-wise and then roll it tightly about 8 times. Then add a dab of hot glue and twist the material around the rolled center, adding glue as you roll. The flower will continue to get bigger until you reach the end of the material. Then add some hot glue to the back and glue down the end of the material underneath the flower. For more in-depth instruction, check out my Rolled Flower Tutorial.
  • Now that you have the flowers made, lay out the scrabble pieces to whatever saying you want to display on your wreath. Then hot glue the tiles onto a piece of paper. Then cut out the tiles, trimming very close to the edges so no paper is showing.

  • Hot glue the Scrabble tiles to the wreath.
  • Now lay out the rolled flowers on the wreath. Once you are happy with the placement. Hot glue the flowers to the burlap wreath.

  • Cut the two coordinating ribbon for the top of the wreath. Make a loop of ribbon for the top of the wreath to hang on the door or wall. Then cut another length of the two ribbon and make a bow. Attach the bow at the top of the wreath to the loop.
  • Hang up and enjoy your new wreath!

**Here’s another fun idea — use Scrabble Holders and letters to spell out your family’s names at the table!

Thanksgiving Project — Turn an old window into Thankful Art!

2 Nov
I found an old glass cabinet door on the side of the road this summer. And instead of just driving by, I popped it into the back of my car.  I’ll show you how I made it into something festive and fun!

My friend Beckie at Infarrantly Creative, the queen of Roadkill Rescue is rubbing off on me – LOL.
The window’s been sitting in my craft room waiting for a redo. I started making it over about a month ago. I originally was going to paint pumpkins on it, but after two craft fails, I gave up on my painting skills. So on to round two — and in came my Silhouette.
First I took off the hinges and painted the frame. I chose a really neutral tan for the frame. I added a little polyurethane over the top.
I printed off a scrolly design for the top and the bottom of the frame. And then used Edwardian Script for the “Be Thankful”.
I took a piece of plywood and cut it to the same size as the inside of the frame. Then I covered the plywood with a very thin layer of batting and fabric. I wrapped the fabric around the back of the plywood sheet and attached it to the wood with Gorilla Glue Tape. And that tape also attached the frame to the back of the window.
The last thing I did was add a sparkly knob!
Very easy project. And if I ever get tired of the Thanksgiving Saying, I can take the vinyl off, print something new and switch out the fabric for a different look!
And — I have some exciting news coming up regarding Silhouette so stay tuned!!
I’m sharing this over at The CSI Project.

Guest Project — Make a Thanksgiving Blessing Board!

29 Oct
Hello all, this is Heather from WhipperBerry! I am soooo excited that Jen invited us WhipperChicks to guest post today on Tatertots & Jell-o! {Giddy!}

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I started thinking it would be lovely to have a place for people to write down and display what they are thankful for at your gathering.
WB 113
So…I came up with the idea for a blessing board and here is how you too can make one…
WB 1
First, you need to find a open frame that you like.  I found this one on clearance at a frame store.  Didn’t love the color, loved the price, so I spray painted…
WB 2

…and distressed a little with some sandpaper.
WB 3
Next, I drilled holes in the inside of the frame.  I didn’t measure, I just placed holes roughly two inches apart.  I didn’t want them to be perfect because I wanted the twine to have a more natural feel once strung.
I then installed Screw Eyes in each of the holes.  I chose screw eyes so that I could restring the frame with ribbon or another material if I wanted later.
WB 4  WB 5
Using heavy weight hemp twine I threaded each of the screws going back in forth.
WB 6
WB 7
Now the fun part begins, embellishing.  I wanted to keep the frame rather neutral so that once Thanksgiving was over I could use the display board for other things.  Think Christmas cards, Valentines, children’s artwork or school work.
The “give thanks” board is created with a basic precut birch wood board from the craft supply store.  Spray painted, distressed and then attached with Scotch Dual Lock Fasteners.  It’s kind of the bigger and much stronger brother to Velcro and I found that at Target.
WB 141
For the “Give” I used brown vinyl and my lovely Cricut.  The “thanks” is created with chip board letters from the craft store, glued on.  I then embellished with burlap and sweater flowers.
WB 150
Emily our paper genius at WhipperBerry fancied up some basic clothes pins with spray paint, paper and Mod Podge.  She also created a fun printable subway art tag for your guest to write down what they are grateful for.
WB 148
Voila, you are ready for your feast!
Well…at least you have a cute blessing board, you still have a lot of cooking to do!
If you would like an opportunity to win this blessing board come on over to WhipperBerry and enter our Blessing Board Giveaway!
WB 129
Thanks Jen, for the opportunity to stop by and say hello.  We are truly honored!
Kisses from the WhipperChicks!!

Thanksgiving Project — make a Thankful Garland

21 Oct
It’s Thursday and time for Mrs. Bliss Holiday Workshop!

Have you checked out all of the great holiday-related posts?? This week there are ideas from creating the perfect outfit for those parties, to wrapping gifts, making a centerpiece and more!! The complete projects and links are at the bottom of the post.

Today I’d like to share a project that can help bring the spirit of Thanksgiving into your home this November —
A Thanksgiving Garland.
**Note — this garland could be used on a fireplace, a shelf, across a window, over a door frame or swagged on a wall — you do not need to have a mantle.
I love Thanksgiving and I think it really gets overlooked between Halloween and Christmas. I want my kids to think about all of the things they are thankful for during the month of November. The garland has leaves on it which can be used in different ways. Here are some ways I thought might be fun to use it:
  • You can have everyone write something they are Thankful for on Thanksgiving Day and then share those things at your dinner. Then when everyone is done sharing their leaves, you can put them on the banner.
  • Or, you could put the banner up November 1st and have a family time where everyone writes their blessings on the leaves and then clip them on the banner and keep it up all month.
  • Or, you could have each of your kids put a blessing on the garland each day, or once a week – depending on how many leaves you want on your garland. Then the blessings are up where everyone can see them all month and that helps everyone keep the spirit of thankfulness all month.
**If your kids are too small to read or spell, they can draw a picture
of what they are thankful for.

I love it because it helps my kids focus on what Thanksgiving is all about and helps them be grateful for all of the positive things
in their lives.

If you would like to make one, here’s what I used:

  • A Grapevine Garland
  • Package of Clothespins
  • Glitter (I used three different colors)
  • Mod Podge
  • Scrapbook Paper (I used 5 different patterns)
  • A few Fall Floral Picks from the Craft Store
  • Ribbon (I used three different kinds)
  • Gorilla Glue Tape (to hold the garland in place)
  • Fabric Scraps (I used 6 different fabric patterns)

Here’s what I did:

1. I unrolled my grapevine garland. I cut the garland a little bit longer than my mantle.

2. I taped the garland on the wall of my craft room while I put the project together, using Gorilla Tape.

3. Take the Fall Floral Picks, cut the pieces apart and put the randomly throughout the grapevine garland. Hot glue them in place.

4. Take a piece of ribbon, wrap it around the garland. Hot glue in place on each end.

5. Make Fabric Rosettes. (Here is a tutorial on how to make Fabric Rosettes.) I made 12 rosettes using 6 different fabrics. Arrange the rosettes in groups. I used 4 groups of 3 rosettes and hot glued them onto the grapevine garland. You will need to press them in place until the glue cools.

6. Brush a layer of Mod Podge over one side of a clothespin. Then sprinkle the clothespin with glitter. Press down on the glitter to make sure it adheres. I had a special assistant help me with this! This is a project that is really fun to do with your kids!! And if they help make it, they will be more excited to make the Blessing Leaves with you later!!

7. Mod Podge and glitter all of your clothespins. I made 20, but you can make as many as you like.

8. Cut out your leaves. I created some leaves and cut them out with my Silhouette. If you don’y have a Silhouette, I created a template you can use. Just print it out and cut out the shapes with scissors. OR, go simpler and cut out a plain, oval leaf shape.
Maple Leaf. Oak Leaf.

9. Clip the leaves on the garland with the sparkly clothespins.

10. Cut out two sets of three different ribbons. Tie the ribbon together on each end of your garland. You can use the ribbon to secure the garland to whatever surface you are putting the garland on.

11. OR, you can use something like Gorilla Tape to secure the ends of the garland to your mantle, door frame or wall. Then cover up the tape with your ribbon on the ends. I also secured the garland to the mantle in a few different places on the mantle so the garland would lay flat. I put the tape underneath the rosettes or under something else that would camouflage the tape.

Now you have a pretty, Thankful Garland that is ready for people to write their blessings on!!

XOXO
