"Summer Social" Guest Project — Throw an Aqua & Orange Summer Birthday Party!

22 Jul
Hi, my name is Mae from Mae Armstrong & Co., I
was inspired by all the handmade parties I’ve seen online and wanted to
give myself a similar challenge.
I’d love to share my Aqua and Orange Birthday Party.
Planning for this party began five
months in advance. I wanted it to be super special for my twin boys and
husband. All three of them share the same birthday. How amazing is that?!

The
trick of course was finding the time to finish all the different
elements I wanted.
Between all of my normal mommy duties, household
chores, errands and freelance gigs, I was able to sneak some time to
research, learn a few DIY birthday projects, design and create my very
own handmade birthday party.

The aqua and blue circus theme was
inspired by a paper carousel from Meri Meri given to my boys
. I loved
the elephant especially, so that became the centerpiece of my design.
After
creating the party invitation, everything began to fall into place.
I
sewed a simple elephant themed fabric pennant and a crochet banner.

I
repurposed my old baby food jars into these pretty little containers for
Jelly Beans
.

I whipped up some homemade caramel popcorn as another
party favor, we added a jar full of animal crackers and goldfish to our
dessert table.

I made birthday shirts, pj’s and bibs for the boys.

I
also created three giant smash cakes. The party hats were handmade too!

As
an added touch – my husband hired his co-worker to play ‘Happy
Birthday’ and some other songs on his bagpipes.

It was an ode to the
boys half-Scottish heritage and filled the neighborhood with some pretty
cool tunes.

Happy 1st Birthday to the sweetest little boys in
the whole world and my loving husband.
Thank you for putting up with me
when I am in my crazy creative moods. I love you and am looking forward
for many more years of celebration.

Huge Thanks to the following vendors.

Mod Podge Mania

31 Mar

Xazmin at This is The Year is having a Mod Podge Party today. Now you know I love myself some Mod Podge – it’s miraculous stuff! I can’t wait to see all of the projects and get more Mod Podge inspiration!

***********************

  • These are the bulletin boards in my office. I cut pieces of scrapbook paper to fit around the frames and then decoupaged it on. Kind of funky and fun.

  • These are some unfinished storage containers I bought at IKEA. I spray painted them off-white and then decoupaged scrapbook paper over the front and added little picture frames and wheels.

  • These are some jumbo paper clips that I sell in my etsy store. I decoupaged scrapbook paper on the front and added little embellishments to give them charm.

  • These are some paper mache eggs that I decoupaged scrapbook paper onto for a fun little arrangement in my family room. ( I was inspired on this one by The Nester)

I’m sure there are some other Mod Podge projects around here, but those are my entries for this party. Another project I’m considering if decoupaging my BAR STOOLS. Is that crazzzzy???

******************

Go on over to Xazmin’s place to join in the Mod Podge Party or just see the fun projects that people have done!

Have a super day!

Favorite Thing Wednesdays: Twilight Party!!!

25 Mar
We had our Twilight Party Saturday night.
It was so fun!

(I saw a take on this centerpiece at this blog)

Decorations:

  • Twilight Edward figure (thanks Jeff!)
  • Twilight posters
  • Twilight books on the mantle
  • We printed Twilight pictures off the internet and hung them around the room
  • Made a centerpiece out of a big tree branch that we spray painted white
  • Decorated the tree with apple die cuts (but apple ornaments would be cute too)
  • Printed out pictures of the Cullen family and put them in black frames
  • Used various heart decorations
  • Found red and black candies and put them around the room in bowls (black licorice, red hots, hot tamale candies)
  • We played the movie soundtrack while everyone came in

Food:

  • Vampire Bite cupcakes
  • Chocolate cupcakes with purple sprinkles
  • Water bottles with Twilight labels
  • Veggie tray (because the Cullens are “vegetarians”)
  • Apple slices with caramel dipping sauce
  • Homemade popcorn with red hots (in individual bags)
  • Red licorice ropes

We also had a hard Twilight game (let me know if you would like a copy) and a prize for the winner. We also had a booby prize for the person who got the least amount right.

{Jeff’s aunt won the booby prize!}

This is my friend who did the party with me. (isn’t she cute?)
She made the fabulous cupcakes.
YUM!

Tasty Tidbits Thursday: Pink and Brown Party!

19 Mar
We had a really fun {pink and brown} birthday dinner
at our church last night for 200 people.

We found some pink polka dot wrapping paper and brown polka dot wrapping paper and wrapped up some empty boxes for decorations.

I found these little baskets to go along with the polka dot theme.
Each table had a glass cake pedestal with eight cupcakes.

The food was delicious. We had a chicken pasta salad, strawberries, green salad and amazing rolls. Of course, once the dinner started I forgot to take pictures of the food, but here is the recipe for the wonderful rolls and honey butter.

***************************
LION HOUSE DINNER ROLLS
{Makes 1 to 1 1/2 Dozen Rolls}
  • 2 cups warm water (110 to 115 degrees F)
  • 2/3 cup non-fat dry milk (instant or non-instant)
  • 2 Tablespoons dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, shortening or margarine (butter is best for flavor)
  • 1 egg
  • 5 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, or bread flour
  • oil for bowl

In bowl of stand mixer with flat attachment combine water and milk powder; stir until milk dissolves. Add yeast, then sugar, salt, butter, egg, and 2 cups of the flour. Mix on low speed until ingredients are wet, then for 2 minutes at medium speed. Add 2 more cups of flour; mix on low speed until incorporated, then for 2 minutes at medium speed. (Dough will be getting stiffer so switch to kneading attachment at this point). Work in the remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until the dough is soft, not overly sticky, but workable and not stiff. (You probably won’t use all the flour).

________________________

Scrape the dough off the sides of the bowl and pour about a tablespoon of vegetable oil down the sides. Rotate the dough ball so that all sides are covered. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in a warm place to rise til double in size (about 45 minutes). Flour a surface for rolling out the dough and turn the dough out. Roll and cut as desired and place in a greased pan. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place in a warm place to rise again til double in size, about 1 hour.

___________________

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Place the rolls in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden. Brush tops with melted butter immediately when removed from the oven. Serve warm with honey butter.

LION HOUSE HONEY BUTTER
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup honey
Whip softened butter. Add vanilla and honey gradually. Beat for 20 minutes. Makes 1 cup.
